Location: South Mount Royal Park

On the closest Sunday to the anniversary of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham the Garrison holds a memorial service at the site of the statue of General Wolfe in South Mount Royal Park in Calgary.  The service honours the soldiers of the French & British armies, les Canadiens, militia from what is now the United States and warriors of the Algonquin and Iroquois who fought, and died, on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec over 250 years ago.  The service also pays tribute to those who continue to serve our country today.  The event includes a parade by the Youth and Senior Squad and the laying of wreaths in honour of the dead.

Prior to 2000, the Calgary Garrison conducted this service outside of the Calgary Science Centre; the original site of the Wolfe Statue in Calgary.  The statue was removed by the City for conservation in 2000 and the service was temporarily discontinued.

In 2009, in honour of the 250th anniversary of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the death of General Wolfe, the Garrison co-sponsored the re-installation of the statue at its current site.  The Garrison’s contribution to the project is recognized in a bronze plaque on the statue plinth.

The ceremony also recognizes anniversaries of significant events of importance to the Frasers and the community:

The public, and in particular the members of the Mount Royal community, are invited to attend this event.  Other participants regularly include representatives of the governments of France and Great Britain, the Province of Alberta, the City of Calgary, the Calgary Police Service,  the Calgary Fire Department and members of the Mounted Troop of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians).
